역사상 가장 탁월한 파트너였던 Lennon/McCartney의 작업에서 아니 역사상 가장 위대한 밴드인 비틀즈에 레넌이 끼친 영향을 부정할 수는 없다. 그는 비틀즈의 정신이었고 카리스마였고 아이콘이었다.
그는 내가 걸음마를 막 시작하던 1980년에 죽었다. 그렇기 때문에 나는 커트 코베인이나 조지 해리슨, 김광석이나 김현식에 대해 가지고 있는 신화소를 레넌에 대해서는 가지고 있지 못하다.
비틀즈를 처음 만난 것이 초등학교 6학년 때였다. 그 나이라면 애늙은이같은 레넌을 싫어할 이유는 충분했다고 생각하지만, 지금까지도 나는 레넌과 그다지 친하지 않다. 레넌의 솔로앨범들을 사듣기 시작한 이후에도, “Power to the People”같은 노래의 가사가 귀에 감기게 된 이후에도, 그리고 지금까지도.
1980년 오늘은 존 레넌이 죽은 날이다. 나와 동시대라고 하기에는 조금은 무리가 있는 그의 죽음을 나는 음악관련 책들의 신화화된 내용들을 통해서만 접할 수 있었다. 그래서 온전히 슬퍼할 수 없었던 것 같다는 생각이 든다. 그래도 이제 조지도 있으니까 심심하지 않을 것이다.
소녀팬들 속에 둘러싸인 인기밴드에서 후기 비틀즈 시절을 지나 오노요꼬와 만나고 평화운동가로 전위예술가로 혹은 진보적 음악가로 살았던 그 긴긴 인생의 끄트머리(이 곡이 실린 앨범은 존 레넌이 죽기 한 달 전에 발매되었다.)에서 말하는 삶의 자세란 '회전목마가 돌아가는 것을 바라보기'였다.
